Growing Spiritually

"But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ." (2 Peter 3:18)

The Bible shows us four different stages of spiritual growth in the Christian life.

The baby stage (1 Corinthians 3:1-4). A baby only thinks of itself, and if denied the things desired, it will have a tantrum. Its feelings are easily hurt and it is often very jealous. A baby lives to be served by others - it can never serve another. It drinks milk - but not solid food or meat. It cries but never sings. It tries to talk but doesn't make sense. Christians that are at this stage must develop their knowledge of the Bible, and their relationship with God and His Son Jesus Christ.

The little child stage (1 John 2:12). Some Christians grow to be little children spiritually but stop there. They fail to continue in their knowledge and repentance because that's what children do. Children are often untruthful, envious and cruel. If they are rebuked they act as martyrs. If upset or criticized they can be resentful and cause a scene. They mock and repeat their parents. They are prone to emotional outbursts and are easily puffed up (made proud). They love praise and will accept it from anywhere. They seek only after what they want. Are you in this stage?

The young man stage (1 John 2:13) Spiritual growth to an adolescent age is difficult. But at this stage one begins to show maturity and strength, and is also able to resist sin and temptation from his enemy. He has a vision of the future and develops the faith, courage, knowledge and wisdom from the Bible to tackle the present and future. He recognizes his weaknesses and failings. He plans and prepares. He puts away childish things. (1 Corinthians 13:11). He grows in his knowledge and love of God and His Son.

The father stage (1 John 2:13). This stage of spiritual development can be reached by everybody but few people ever attain it. (Matthew 7:13-14) At this stage the believer has peace with God. (Romans 5:1) He knows the peace of God. (Philippians 4:7) He rejoices in his spiritual children. (1 Thessalonians 2:19, 1 Timothy 1:2) He has learned contentment under all circumstances. (Philippians 4:11) He knows the only source of true strength. (Philippians 4:13) He does not brood over the past but looks to the future. (Philippians 3:13-14) He knows that all things work together in his life for his eternal good. (Romans 8:28) He enjoys abundant life now, and will enjoy it in the life to come. (Ephesians 2:7)
